The Recopa Sudamericana is a football competition for club teams that has been held annually with interruptions since 1989 and is organized by the South American continental association CONMEBOL . It is comparable to the UEFA Super Cup hosted by UEFA .
history
From 1989 to 1998, the winner of the Copa Libertadores and the winner of the Supercopa Sudamericana determined the winner of the Recopa in two- legged matches in the following calendar year. When the Supercopa was discontinued in 1998, the Recopa was no longer played. Since the introduction of the Copa Sudamericana in 2002, the Recopa has been played again in the following calendar year, for the first time in 2003, between the winners of the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, usually with a return leg.
A special feature was that games for the Recopa were played twice at the same time as part of another competition, namely the first leg in 1993 as a league game for the Brazilian championship and both games in 1999 as group games of the Copa Mercosur . In 1991 the title was awarded to Olimpia Asunción without a fight, as the club won both the Copa Libertadores and the Supercopa. In 1993, Sao Paulo FC also won both competitions. This time, however, the winner of the Copa Conmebol, which has now also not been held, was invited as an opponent.
The 2005 edition was carried out under the name Recopa FOX SPORTS Sudamericana . After that, the competition from 2006 to 2008 was called Recopa VISA Sudamericana . There was no sponsorship for the competition from 2009 to 2011 . Since 2012 the competition has been called Recopa Santander Sudamericana .
mode
In the past, some events were decided in just one game on a neutral court. Recopa took place in the USA in 1990, in Japan in 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1997, and again in the USA in 2003 and 2004.
Currently, the Recopa is decided in the return leg, with the Libertadores winner having home rights in the second leg. The winner is the team with the most points. If both teams have won a game, the goal difference decides. If this is also the same or if both games end in a draw, there is extra time in the second leg and, if necessary, penalty shoot-outs . The away goals rule does not apply.
Leaderboards
The previous 25 competitions have been won by 17 different clubs from 8 countries, with the clubs from Brazil being the most successful with 10 titles. Boca Juniors from Buenos Aires are the record winners with four titles .
