Coupe d'AOF

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Coupe d'AOF ( French : Coupe d'Afrique Occidentale Française ) was the football cup competition of the French colonial federation of French West Africa .

After the Football Association of French West Africa, the Ligue d'AOF de Football , had been founded in Dakar on March 31, 1946 , association president Barat decided to hold a club competition after a trophy had been donated by the French association Fédération Française de Football (FFF). This competition was initially limited to Senegalese clubs, but contemporary media referred to the competition partly as Coupe du Sénégal and partly as Coupe d'AOF , the latter designation having prevailed by the time of the final. The first edition was a complete success and was followed with passion by the public. Sixteen clubs from the four cities of Senegal - Dakar, Saint-Louis , Rufisque , Gorée - played the first title holder in the knockout system. In the final, US Gorée and player- coach Raoul Diagne defeated Jeanne d'Arc Dakar 2-1.

In the following years teams from Benin , Upper Volta (today Burkina Faso ), French Sudan (today Mali ), Guinea , Ivory Coast and Niger as well as Togo , which was not part of the federation, took part. The organizing football association was affiliated with the association of the mother country in 1951.
