The Copa Aldao (also called Copa Ricardo Aldao , Campeonato Rioplatense or Copa Río de La Plata ) was a South American club soccer competition that took place in the first half of the 20th century between representatives from Argentina and Uruguay , usually the two championship winners of the Primera División Uruguaya (up to 1932 Uruguay Football Association League) and the Liga Argentina de Fútbol (until 1931 Argentine Association Football League). It was donated by Ricardo C. Aldao , who was President of the Federación Argentina de Football from 1912 to 1914 and President of the Asociación del Fútbol Argentino (AFA) from 1918 to 1919 .
Originally, the competition consisted of only one play-off, but on January 22, 1941, the Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol (AUF) and the AFA announced that a first and a return leg would have to be played from the next event. With the exception of 1942, this also happened subsequently. In 1955, however, due to a refusal to appear, only the first leg was served again. After that, the clubs were reluctant to participate, as this was extremely difficult to reconcile with other obligations. In general, the encounters took place with a significant delay to the relevant league season. For example, the game for 1946 was not played until the spring of 1948, after the game for 1947.
↑ The game between River Plate FC and Estudiantes did not start due to heavy rain. Some sources speak of a 4-1 win for Estudiantes.
↑ Both opponents in 1923 had split off from the league with other clubs in their respective countries and launched their own game system. Because of this, the title was not officially recognized that year.
↑ 1940 the Argentine CA Boca Juniors left the game at 2-2, whereupon Nacional won the title.
↑ The return match in 1942 was not played and the title was therefore not officially proclaimed.
↑ In 1946 both the Club Nacional de Football and the CA San Lorenzo de Almagro had each won a game. It was decided to award victory to both teams. The trophy went to Nacional, however, as the Montevideo club had scored more goals.
↑ 1955 the Uruguayan Club Nacional de Football did not play for the second leg against the CA River Plate in Buenos Aires. The title was awarded to the Argentine association, but not officially proclaimed.
