Intercontinental Supercup

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Intercontinental Supercup ( English also Intercontinental Champions' Supercup , Spanish Recopa Intercontinental or Supercopa de Campeones Intercontinentales ) was an intercontinental football club competition that was played only in 1969 with one match. The previously established winners of the Intercontinental Cup , usually referred to as the World Cup in German-speaking countries, were eligible to start .

Potential participants for the first edition in 1969 were Real Madrid (winner 1960) and Inter Milan (1964, 1965) from Europe . From South America, Peñarol Montevideo (winner 1961, 1966), FC Santos (1962, 1963) and Racing Club (Avellaneda) (1967) were eligible . The finalists should be determined in the respective continental qualifying rounds. Since Real Madrid withdrew their participation, Inter Milan was clear as the European finalist without a fight. In South America, the Supercopa de Campeones Intercontinentales served as a qualifying tournament. Here FC Santos prevailed in a league round with a round trip and qualified for the final against Inter Milan.

For the second outage in 1970, in addition to Real Madrid, which again waived, Inter Milan also canceled its participation, so that no European representative took part. The South American qualifying tournament , whose field of participants had expanded to include Estudiantes de La Plata (winner of the 1968 World Cup), Club Atlético Peñarol won. In the end, no more titles were played in the second edition.

Due to the low level of interest, especially from clubs from Europe, and due to scheduling reasons, a third event planned for 1971 did not take place.
