The International Football Cup , or international football championship , as it says on the trophy, was a European competition for football clubs . It was held between 1961 and 1967 and, especially in German-speaking countries, was also known as the Rappan Cup or Rappan Cup after its creator Karl Rappan . The FC La Chaux-de-Fonds from Switzerland was the only team to take part in all six competitions.

History and meaning

The International Football Cup made it possible for football teams who were neither qualified as national champions for the European Cup or Cup winners for the European Cup Winners' Cup nor came from a city with trade fairs and therefore could not start in the trade fair cup to play internationally. Due to the increasing opening of the trade fair cup, the International Football Cup was inevitably pushed into the fourth member and therefore discontinued after only six editions. However, it was agreed that smaller teams in the new Intertoto Cup would continue to have the opportunity to play internationally and thus also ensure that games for the national soccer pools were played during the summer break .

The trophy remained with the last winner of the competition, Eintracht Frankfurt .
