Copa Mercosur
The Copa Mercosur ( pt .: Copa Mercosul ) was a club soccer competition that was held from 1998 to 2001 by the South American continental association CONMEBOL . The theme of the competition was the membership of the home countries of the participating associations in the Mercosur trade pact . rsssf.com notes that the competition should mainly increase the television revenues of various South American top clubs. Although there was no Merconorte trade pact , the Copa Merconorte was held parallel to the Copa Mercosur for the clubs of northern South America, later extending to Central and North America .
The successor to the never particularly popular competition was to be the Copa Panamericana , the first edition of which was postponed from 2002 to 2003. Ultimately, however, this was replaced by the Copa Sudamericana .
mode
Participants from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay will be divided into five groups of four. In league mode, the clubs compete against each other in home and away games and determine the quarter-finalists. The five group winners and the three best runners-up qualify. From now on, the tournament winner will be determined in the cup mode with two legs.
In the finals, goal difference did not count, but a play-off was held on the place of the club that last had home rights. In the last playout, it was waived and the decision was brought about by penalty shoot-out.
