Copa Conmebol
The Copa Conmebol was from 1992 to 1999 after the Copa Libertadores the second most important South American club soccer competition , which was organized by the continental soccer confederation CONMEBOL and was held a total of eight times. The competition was comparable to the UEFA Cup , but differed from it in that teams that also played the Copa Libertadores could take part. B. Teams from Venezuela did multiple times. 16 teams competed against each other in the first and second legs according to the knockout system to determine the cup winner.
In 1996, the so-called Copa Conmebol Master took place in Brazil between the winners from 1992 to 1995, Atlético Mineiro, Botafogo FR, FC São Paulo, and CA Rosario Central, which São Paulo won.
The Copa Conmebol has not taken place since 2000, as the Copa Libertadores was increased to 32 teams. The short-lived competitions Copa Mercosur and Copa Merconorte took place from 1998 to 2001 , which for a short time replaced the Copa Conmebol as the second most important club competition in South America. From 2002 on, the Copa Sudamericana , which is still held today, took its place .
