Copa Conmebol Master

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Copa Conmebol Master , also Copa Master da Conmebol , was a South American football competition that was played in February 1996 among the winners of the Copa Conmebol from 1992 to 1995. The tournament was won by the Brazilian club São Paulo FC .

Cuiabá

The venue was the Estádio Governador José Fragelli in Cuiabá , the capital of the state of Mato Grosso in west-central Brazil , which at the time had a capacity of almost 50,000 people .

The participating teams were the Brazilian clubs Atlético Mineiro (winner 1992), Botafogo FR (1993), FC São Paulo (1994), and Rosario Central from Argentina (winner 1995). The winner was the team from São Paulo, which was then coached by Muricy Ramalho , who a decade later would lead the club to a hat trick in the national championship. The clubs competed against each other in the knockout system to determine the cup winner.

Five-time international Almir of São Paulo was the top scorer of the tournament with 5 goals, ahead of Valdir, also São Paulo, and Túlio Costa of Botafogo with three goals each.

In terms of sport, the importance of the tournament, which was also ironically named after the broadcasting television station Copa SBT in Brazil , is of secondary importance. Even the Copa Conmenbol came to an early end after its eighth play in 1999. Comparable short-lived tournaments that were mainly experimented with in the 1990s and primarily pursued commercial interests were, for example, Copa Mercosur and Copa Merconorte , as well as the Copa Master de Supercopa and Supercopa Sudamericana .
