Sergipe [ sɛʁˈʒipi ], officially Portuguese Estado de Sergipe , is a federal state in the northeast region of Brazil .

geography

Sergipe is the smallest state in Brazil in terms of area. It borders the Brazilian states of Alagoas and Bahia as well as the Atlantic Ocean .

The northern border is the Rio São Francisco , a 3,199 km long river.

Sergipe had 2,068,017 inhabitants according to the 2010 census of the IBGE and an area of ​​21,915 km². The population density was 94.36 inhabitants per km². The IBGE presented an estimate dated July 1, 2019, according to which the population could have grown to 2,298,696 inhabitants.

Almost two thirds of the Sergipanos live in cities, most of them in the capital Aracaju .

Typical for Sergipe are the jangadas , seaworthy rafts with characteristic triangular sails, with which the fishermen go out to sea.

Belivaldo Chagas of the PSD has been governor since April 6, 2018 . He had officially taken over the post from his predecessor Jackson Barreto , who wanted to run for the Bundessenat that year. In the elections in Brazil in 2018 Chagas 50th governor was the state. Eliane Aquino des Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) became its vice-governor .

Surname

The state takes its name from the Rio Sergipe River , on the western bank of which is the capital Aracaju.
