The São Francisco is a 3,199 kilometer long river or stream in Brazil . The Rio São Francisco rises in the south of the state of Minas Gerais in the Serra da Canastra and flows through the states of Bahia , Sergipe , Pernambuco and Alagoas towards the South Atlantic .

From its source the São Francisco flows mainly in a northerly direction through two very large reservoirs: Três-Marias reservoir and much further north Sobradinho reservoir , then on the border of Bahia and Pernambuco through the Itaparica reservoir . It then bends slightly to the southeast to flow into the South Atlantic as a border river between the small Brazilian states of Sergipe and Alagoas.
The central reaches of the São Francisco are navigable over a length of 1,368 kilometers. Near the border with the state of Bahia are the rapids of Pirapora and where the river breaks through the coastal mountains, the Paulo Afonso Falls (Cachoeira de Paulo Afonso) with the Paulo Afonso hydropower complex and also the Xingó hydropower plant . This means that the lower course is not navigable. The catchment area of the river covers 617,812 km².
Passage of the river
The Brazilian federal government is currently building two canal systems through which water from the Rio São Francisco will be transferred to the north and north-east in order to improve the water supply in the south of the drought-ridden north-east of Brazil. The completion of this São Francisco project is scheduled for 2015. The project has long been controversial; The hunger strike of the Bishop of Barra , Dom Frei Luiz Cappio , in 2007 also became known in Germany .
