The Xingó hydropower plant [ ʃĩˈɡɔ ] was built in 1994 on the Rio São Francisco in Brazil between the states of Alagoas and Sergipe . The nearest towns are Piranhas in Alagoas (12 km away) and Canindé do São Francisco in Sergipe (6 km away). The dam is also 65 km from the Paulo Afonso hydropower complex, which is also located on São Francisco.
The barrier structure is a dam made of loose rock material with a concrete surface on the water side (" CFR dam "). The hydropower plant currently has six turbines with an output of 527 MW each, a total of 3162 MW. In 2010 the power plant is to be expanded to 10 turbines, corresponding to approx. 5000 MW. The reservoir is 65 km long.
For most of the dimensions of the dam and the reservoir there are very different and very different information in different sources (see table). The storage capacity is probably 3800 million m³ and the reservoir area is 60 km², resulting in an average depth of 63.3 m.
