The Itaparica reservoir is a large dam with a hydroelectric power station on São Francisco near Itaparica and Paolo Afonso in Brazil . Another name for the dam is Luiz Gonzaga .
The dam was built by the Companhia Hidrelectrica do Vale do São Francisco (Chesf), a daughter of Eletrobrás . The barrier structure consists of earth and rock fill and is 105 m high and 4700 m long.
The reservoir lies on the border of the states of Bahia and Pernambuco . The Sobradinho reservoir is located further up on Sao Francisco .
Protests and resettlements
The dam project was controversial because 40,000 to 50,000 people had to be relocated. When the impoundment began in February 1988, all families had moved to new settlements, where they received new apartments or alternatively, cash payments.
