Belivaldo Chagas Silva (born April 19, 1960 in Simão Dias ) is a Brazilian politician of the Partido Social Democrático . He succeeded Jackson Barreto as the 50th governor of Sergipe state in 2018 .

Life

Belivaldo Chagas is the son of the merchant Arivaldo Chagas Silva and Maria Belizana da Silva and was born in Simão Dias, Sergipe. As a young man he moved to Salvador , Bahia, where he finished school. Back in Sergipe, he completed a law degree at the private Universidade Tiradentes in Aracaju . As a lawyer, he worked as a public defender .

Chagas is a party changer, from 1986 to 1993 he belonged to the Partido da Frente Liberal (PFL), renamed Democratas , from 1993 to 1995 to the former Partido Progressista (PP), from 1995 to 2016 to the Partido Socialista Brasileiro (PSB) , from 2016 to 2018 the Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (MDB) and since 2018 the Partido Social Democrático.

Controversy

In 2018, Sergipe's federal prosecutor filed for the impeachment and disqualification of re-elected governor Belivaldo Chagas for eight years on suspicion of irregular practices during the election campaign. According to the regional electoral attorney's office, the investigation revealed an abuse of political, economic power and authority. According to the electoral court, Chagas repeatedly used the administrative apparatus of the state government to promote his image and his candidacy. Shortly before the electoral term, he had signed dozens of orders for several municipalities in Sergipe.

On July 4, 2019, businessman Sadi Paulo Castiel Gitz committed suicide in front of Belivaldo Chagas and the Minister of Mines and Energy during the Symposium of Possibilities for the New Natural Gas Scenario in Sergipe , an event to be discussed with prospects for the state's industry , Bento Albuquerque . According to witnesses, after the Governor of Sergipe's speech, the businessman shouted “Belivaldo, you are a liar”, then drew a gun and shot himself in the mouth.
