history

The actual beginning of the conservative newspaper coincides with the first edition of the evening paper Folha de Noite , a newspaper of the urban middle class, which was created during the coffee barone era. It first appeared on February 19, 1921. In July 1925, the morning edition Folha da Manhã was added, 24 years later the afternoon edition Folha da Tarde . On January 1, 1960, the company's three editions were merged into the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper .

The publications published by the Folha de S. Paulo also include the magazines sãopaulo and Serafina and the guiaFolha as well as the Agora newspaper with the Revista da Hora .

It has gone through many changes in the turbulent history of Brazil. In contrast to the rival paper O Estado de S. Paulo , the newspaper supported the new rulers after the military coup of 1964 until the reign of Ernesto Geisel . In the 1970s this led to a series of attacks by left-wing resistance groups against institutions of the paper. In the early 1980s, a renewed editorial team supported the Diretas Já civil rights movement . With the fall of the dictatorship and the regaining of freedom of the press , Folha de S. Paulo became an important mouthpiece for public opinion and played an important role in the impeachment proceedings against President Fernando Collor de Mello in 1992 .

Today the newspaper exerts a great influence on other opinion leaders. It presents itself with a wide range of information, mostly divided into short, often illustrated articles. The newspaper tries to present different views on contentious issues and relies heavily on graphics, charts and photographs.

The group employs 9,000 people and generates around 7,000 more indirect jobs. It also owns Datafolha , one of the most prestigious research institutions in the country, the Publifolha book publisher , a virtual bookstore Livraria da Folha , the Folhapress news agency , one of the largest and most modern graphic facilities in Latin America (CTG-F), Transfolha for the distribution of Folha's products Gruppe, a printing company for brochures for companies, various publishers and advertising agencies, FolhaGráfica and the SPDL, a distribution and logistics company run in collaboration with the newspaper "O Estado de S. Paulo".
