João Agripino da Costa Doria Junior , called João Doria (born December 16, 1957 in São Paulo ) is a Brazilian entrepreneur and politician and was Mayor of São Paulo from January 1, 2017 to April 6, 2018. He has been the 37th governor of the state of São Paulo since January 1, 2019 .

Career

Doria studied psychology in Paris and Sussex . In 1992 he founded Grupo Doria, a communication and marketing company. In the local elections in October 2016 , Doria ran for the political center-based Brazilian Social Democratic Party (PSDB) for the post of prefect (mayor) of São Paulo, the largest city in Brazil . With 53.3% of the vote, he was able to prevail in the first ballot. Since January 1st, 2017 he has been acting mayor of São Paulo. He succeeded Fernando Haddad from the Workers' Party (PT).

In April 2018, he resigned as mayor of São Paulo in order to then run for the post of governor of the state of São Paulo, which he achieved in the first round of elections on October 7, 2018 with 6,431,555 or 31.77% of the valid votes.

From April 6, 2018, Bruno Covas , who is also a member of the PSDB, was succeeded as city prefect .
