José Maria Marin

José Maria Marin (born May 6, 1932 in São Paulo ) is a Brazilian lawyer , sports official , politician and former soccer player . Between May 1982 and March 1983, while still under the military dictatorship, he was governor of the state of São Paulo . From March 2012 to April 2015 he was President of the Brazilian Football Association, the Confederação Brasileira de Futebol .

He was detained from May 27, 2015 until the end of March 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , he was released early from prison.

Career

José Maria Marin has always been present in football and politics throughout his career. During his student days he was active as a right winger at São Paulo FC from 1950 to 1952 , then he went into politics. From 1964 to 1970 he was a councilor of the city of São Paulo and in 1969 took over the office of mayor.

He later took a seat in the legislative assembly of the state of São Paulo, which he held until 1979. He then became vice governor. In May 1982 he took over the post of governor from the outgoing Paulo Maluf and remained in office until March 1983.

Marin returned to the sports scene in 1982 when he assumed the presidency of the São Paulo State Football Association . He stayed in office until 1988. In 1986 he acted as head of the Brazilian delegation at the World Cup . In 2007 he was elected Vice President of the Southeast Region of the Confederação Brasileira de Futebol and, in 2012, after Ricardo Teixeira's retirement, became the oldest deputy President of the CBF. He was also President of COL, the organizing committee for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Together with five other FIFA officials, he was arrested on May 27, 2015 at the Baur au Lac Hotel in Zurich for involvement in corruption in FIFA . He is said to have accepted several million dollars in the award of South American tournaments. At the beginning of November he was extradited to the USA. In 2017, a New York court found him guilty. The sentence was set at four years in prison in 2018.
