Orestes Quércia (born August 18, 1938 in Pedregulho , State of São Paulo , † December 24, 2010 in São Paulo ) was a Brazilian politician . From March 15, 1987 to March 15, 1991 he was the governor of the state of São Paulo.

Life

At the beginning of his career there was an involvement in the student movement. He also edited the Akadenmie newspaper. Later he worked as a radio maker Quercia in Campinas. Studied law (1962) and was elected councilor and mayor of Campinas (1968). He had alleys and cobbled streets built, and also set up water treatment systems in residential areas.

He later became a Senator, Member of Parliament (1969), Deputy Governor and Governor of São Paulo from 1987 to 1991. He is one of the founders of the Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB); took over the presidency of the party in March 1991 as the successor to Ulysses Guimarães .

Quercia has not won an election since he left the government. He competed for the 1994 presidency, 1998 for the state and senate in 2002 and 2006. He died of prostate cancer in December 2010 in a hospital in São Paulo .
