Geraldo José Rodrigues de Alckmin Filho (born November 7, 1952 in Pindamonhangaba , São Paulo ) is a Brazilian politician and co-founder of the economically liberal social democratic party Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB). Life

Alckmin is the son of Geraldo José Rodrigues Alckmin and Miriam Penteado Rodrigues Alckmin, his uncle is the judge José Geraldo Rodrigues Alckmin (1915–1978). He studied medicine at the Universidade de Taubaté , specialized in anesthesiology and worked at a hospital. He is married and has three children.

In 1977, at the age of 25, he became the youngest mayor of Brazil in the city of Pindamonhangaba. Alckmin was elected Deputy Governor of the State of São Paulo twice, in 1994 and 1998 . In this position he moved up on March 7, 2001 for the deceased Governor Mario Covas . On October 27, 2002, Alckmin was elected governor. He held this office until March 31, 2006.

In June 2006, Alckmin was chosen by the PSDB as a candidate for the 2006 presidential election , in which he was the only promising candidate besides incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva . After none of the candidates received an absolute majority in the 1st ballot on October 1, he lost the runoff election against Lula on October 29 .

In 2010 Alckmin ran again for the office of governor of São Paulo and was already successful in the first ballot. He took up this office on January 1, 2011 and held it until April 6, 2018. On this day, Márcio Luiz França Gomes from the Partido Socialista Brasileiro (PSB) took over the post from Alckmin. This was a prerequisite for the latter to be able to run for the 2018 presidential election.

On July 19, 2018, he was chosen by the center parties as their candidate for the 2018 presidential election . The following parties support his candidacy: Democratas (DEM), Partido Progressista (PP), Partido da República (PR), Partido Republicano Brasileiro (PRB) and the Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB). The list of political parties in Brazil provides more information on the organization of these parties . Despite this considerable support, Alckmin was only fourth with just 4.76 percent of the vote in the first ballot.
