Mario Covas

Mario Covas (born April 21, 1930 in Santos , † March 6, 2001 in São Paulo ) was a Brazilian politician .

In 1952 he graduated from the University of São Paulo with a degree in civil engineering . Covas was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for the PST in 1962 as a representative of the state of São Paulo . In 1966 he founded the Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB) when the political parties in Brazil had been abolished by the military dictatorship. On January 19, 1969, his political rights were abolished by the dictatorship and were not restored until 1979. In 1982 Covas was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for the Party of the Brazilian Democratic Movement (PMDB), which emerged from the MDB after the democratization of Brazil.

On May 10, 1983, he was nominated as mayor of São Paulo and remained in office until December 31, 1985. Covas has become one of the most prestigious mayors of São Paulo of all time.

Covas was elected Senator for the State of São Paulo to the National Congress in 1986 . He founded the Brazilian Social Democratic Party (PSDB) in 1988 and was elected governor of São Paulo state in 1994 . In 1998 he was re-elected.

Covas died in 2001 while he was still in office.
