Francisco de Paula Rodrigues Alves
Francisco de Paula Rodrigues Alves (born July 7, 1848 in Guaratinguetá , São Paulo , † January 16, 1919 in Rio de Janeiro , Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian politician and the fifth president from November 15, 1902 to November 15, 1906 from Brazil.
Life
His public career began in his hometown in 1866. In 1870 he graduated as a lawyer from the Law Faculty of the Universidade de São Paulo in São Paulo and then became a public prosecutor. From November 19, 1887 to April 27, 1888 he was President of the Province of São Paulo . After the proclamation of the republic he was a member of the constituent assembly. From May 1, 1900 to February 13, 1902 he was again governor of the State of São Paulo and resigned for the Brazilian presidency. In the presidential election in Brazil in 1902 he was elected by a large majority. During his presidency, Rio de Janeiro was extensively rebuilt. In 1918 he was re-elected president, but died of the Spanish flu before taking office , so that his vice president Delfim Moreira da Costa Ribeiro became president of Brazil.
