Guaratinguetá , officially Portuguese Município da Estância Turística de Guaratinguetá , is a Brazilian city in the east of the state of São Paulo with around 120,000 inhabitants.
The Município extends over 751 km² at an average altitude of 530 m above sea level. NN. The name of the city comes from a Tupí language : gûyra ( heron ), tinga (white) and etá (many), so Gûyrating'etá (many white herons).
The 1986 South American Basketball Championship for women took place here.
Education and economy
Guaratinguetá is located in the Vale do Paraíba , one of the economically strongest regions in Brazil. The Faculty of Engineering (FEG) of the state university UNESP is located in Guaratinguetá, as are facilities of the German companies BASF and Liebherr .
Town twinning
In October 1992 the community signed a sister city agreement with the Japanese Ōizumi .
