Antônio Galvão entered the Franciscan monastery in São Paulo in 1760. He spent his whole life as a pastor in the city and devoted himself particularly to helping the poor. In 1822, the year Brazil gained independence, he died and was buried in the Mosteiro da Luz monastery, where his tomb attracts numerous pilgrims.

In 1998 Antônio Galvão was beatified by Pope John Paul II . His canonization by Pope Benedict XVI. is the first canonization of a native Brazilian and the first canonization that this Pope personally led during a trip abroad.
