Sir Isaac Lyon Goldsmid, 1st Baronet (born January 13, 1778 in London , † April 27, 1859 ibid) was a British entrepreneur.

Life

He made his fortune as a partner in the London company Mocatta & Goldsmid (founded 1684), which acted as broker for the Bank of England and the East India Company in the trading of gold bars .

He was instrumental in founding the University of London in 1837. For his services, he was awarded the hereditary title of Baronet , of St John's Lodge in the County of Surrey , on October 15, 1841 . He was the first Jew to be awarded a baronet title in the United Kingdom.

In 1846, the Portuguese government awarded him the title of Baron da Palmeira for his services in the settlement of a financial dispute between the Kingdom of Portugal and the Empire of Brazil .

Isaac Goldsmid was a pioneer of Jewish emancipation in England and campaigned for Jews to be accepted as candidates for parliament.

Isaac Lyon Goldsmid married his cousin Isabel Goldsmid (1788-1860). Their eldest son was the English politician Francis Henry Goldsmid (1808-1878). He inherited his paternal title and was a member of the British Parliament for the constituency of Reading . His wife was the feminist Louisa Sophia Goldsmid (1819–1908). The second son was the politician Frederick David Goldsmid (1812–1866). He was a Liberal MP for the Honiton constituency and heir to his father's estate at Somerhill House . His daughter Mary Ada Goldsmid (1836-1905) married in 1856 the co-owner of "Mocatta & Goldsmid" Frederick David Mocatta (1828-1905).
