Frederick David Mocatta (born January 15, 1828 in London ; † January 16, 1905 there ) was an English - Jewish entrepreneur and philanthropist .

Life

Frederick David Mocatta entered the in of his ancestor Moses Mocatta († 1693) 1684 1843 London , founded Bullion - brokers -Unternehmen Mocatta & Goldsmid one. In 1849 he was accepted into the company as a partner and finally took over its management in 1857 until he retired from the business in 1874.

Afterwards he was almost exclusively active in philanthropy, u. a. leading member of the Anglo-Jewish Association and sponsor of the Jewish scientist Leopold Zunz in Berlin .

Mocatta's merit is, among other things, the centralization of Jewish philanthropic institutions. He bequeathed part of his library to the Jewish National Library in Jerusalem, and most of it to the Jewish Historical Society of England . He also emerged as a writer, his book The Jews of Spain and Portugal and the Inquisition (London 1877) was translated into several languages.

Frederick David Mocatta was the eldest son of Abraham Lindo Mocatta (1797–1880) and his wife Miriam Brandon (1796–1878).

In 1856 he married Mary Ada Goldsmid (1836-1905). She was the daughter of the English-Jewish politician Frederick David Goldsmid (1812–1866). This was liberal deputy of the British Parliament for the constituency Honiton and heir of the estate Somerhill House . Frederick David Goldsmid's father was the entrepreneur Isaac Lyon Goldsmid (1778-1859) and his older brother was the politician Francis Henry Goldsmid (1808-1878). His wife was the English feminist Louisa Sophia Goldsmid (1819–1908).

Frederick David Mocatta and his wife had no children.
