The building at Kanalstrasse 12/1 in Esslingen am Neckar is a listed building from the time of industrialization in Württemberg .

history

The two-storey classicist building on the Rossneckarkanal was built in the 19th century as a combination of a house and a factory and was also used in this sense until 1914. While the factory was located on the ground floor, the owner of the factory lived on the first floor. The last owner of the factory to use the house in this way was Christian Mayer. After the Royal Württemberg Higher Mechanical Engineering School was relocated from Stuttgart to Esslingen in 1914 , the ground floor of the building was converted into a restaurant. The rooms on the other floors were rented to students of the institution.

From 1914 to 1916 the inn was called Wirtschaft zur Maschinenbauschule and was then renamed Field Marshal Hindenburg . It bore this name for several decades. In 1975 Field Marshal Hindenburg became the channel tavern . The establishment lost its reputation, was finally closed and then stood empty for years. After extensive renovation, the house was used as a boarding house with seven furnished apartments from 2009 .

The house at Kanalstrasse 12/1 is a rare example of early industrial building types in Württemberg and was therefore listed as a historical monument. The eaves saddle roof structure was built in half-timbered construction, but has a solid base. It has suggested gable cornices and corner blocks and stands on a site that was already used economically in the Middle Ages . Soil evidence indicates the settlement of tanneries and glue boilers in the area of today's Kanalstrasse 12/1 and the area to the north of it.
