Aracaju , officially Portuguese Município de Aracaju , is the capital of the Brazilian state of Sergipe . It is located at the mouth of the Rio Sergipe in the Atlantic Ocean , about 350 kilometers north of Salvador da Bahia . In 2010 it had around 571,000 inhabitants, the population was estimated at 657,013 in 2019. It makes up about a quarter of the state's population.
The name of the city is composed of “ Ara ” (a species of parrot) and “ Cajú ” (a fruit).
history
The city was founded in 1855 at the time of the Brazilian Empire and planned to move the capital of the then Sergipe province from São Cristóvão to a new city with better development conditions.
In 1910 Aracaju became the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Aracaju .
politics
City Prefect (Mayor) of Aracaju for the 2017-2020 electoral period is Edvaldo Nogueira of the Partido Comunista do Brasil (PCdoB), who has held this office since 2006 , interrupted by João Alves Filho .
