João Alves Filho

João Alves Filho (born July 3, 1941 in Aracaju , Sergipe ) is a Brazilian politician .

Life

João Alves Filho was elected city prefect of Aracaju in the local elections in 2012 on October 7th with 52.72% of the vote . He held this office between 1974 and 1977. He was governor of the state of Sergipe in the 1983–1987, 1991–1994 and 2003–2006 terms. From 1987 to 1990 he was Brazilian Interior Minister.

In May 2007 he and his son João Alves Neto were the target of a federal police investigation by the Operação Navalha into fraud in tenders for public works as part of Lula da Silva's newly created economic acceleration program PAC (Programa de Aceleração do Crescimento).

He is married to the Brazilian Senator Maria do Carmo Alves . They have three children together.

Alves Filho is the namesake of two football stadiums, Estádio João Alves Filho, in the cities of Propriá and Gararu in Sergipe.
