Jackson de Figueiredo Martins (born October 9, 1891 in Aracaju , Brazil , † November 4, 1928 in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil) was a Brazilian lawyer , intellectual and publicist .

Life

De Figueiredo was a well known intellectual and publicist in Brazil. Motivated by the pastoral letter of 1916 from the Bishop of Olinda , Sebastião Leme da Silveira Cintra , he converted to Catholicism in 1918, which caused a sensation and became the reference point of Brazilian lay Catholicism. His conversion also gave the decisive impetus for the formation of a conservative political Catholicism in Brazil. With this intention and encouraged by Bishop Leme da Silveira, he founded the Centro Dom Vital in 1922 , named after the deceased Bishop of Olinda Vital Maria Conçalves de Oliveira and in 1921 the magazine A Ordem (The Order). With these two he fought communism and liberalism of his time.

He died in Rio de Janeiro in 1928, but his influence continued and ultimately resulted in the establishment in 1932 of the Liga Electoral Católica - LEC as the Catholic representative for the Constituent Assembly convened by President Getúlio Dornelles Vargas .
