Copa Interamericana

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Copa Interamericana ( English : Interamerican Cup ) was an intercontinental club soccer competition that was played a total of 18 times between the winners of the CONCACAF Champions' Cup and the winners of the Copa Libertadores from 1969 to 1998 .

The mode of the Copa Interamericana is comparable to the Afro-Asian Cup and the Europe-South American Cup (World Cup), but never came close to the popularity of the latter. In addition, the competition, which was usually held one and a half years later, was canceled for many years. Most recently, the Libertadores winners even waived twice in favor of subordinate clubs. With two exceptions, the game was played in the first and second leg, whereby the goal difference was initially irrelevant, so that a decider was necessary if the points were equal. Twice, however, the decision was sought in the second leg.

Since 2005, the FIFA Club World Cup has been held annually as a tournament involving all six winners of the most important continental club competitions.
