Club Social y Deportivo Municipal is a football club from the capital of Guatemala , Guatemala City . The club, which was founded in May 1936, is the record champions of Guatemala with 25 national championships and is also considered the most popular team in the country.
In 1942 Municipal won the first championship title. The greatest international success was the 1974 CONCACAF Champions Cup victory against SV Transvaal from Suriname . 1995 succeeded again in the final, but this time Deportivo Saprissa from Costa Rica retained the upper hand.
Stadion
CSD Municipal plays its home games in the multi-purpose stadium Estadio Mateo Flores , which is named after the local marathon runner Doroteo "Mateo" Flores . Opened in 1950 under the name Estadio Olímpico with the Central America and Caribbean Games , the stadium has 30,000 seats. In 1973, 1986 and 2001 the Juegos Deportivos Centroamericanos , the Central American Games, took place here.
During a qualifying game for the 1998 World Cup in October 1996, one of the biggest stadium disasters in history occurred due to overcrowding. At least 83 people were killed and many others injured.
