Liga Nacional de Guatemala
The Liga Nacional de Guatemala is the top division in Guatemalan football . It is run by the Federación Nacional de Fútbol de Guatemala , the country's football association.
history
In 1919, the Guatemalan football champions were played for the first time in the Liga Capitalina . At the same time, the Campeonato Nacional took place between 1919 and 1923 , in which regional selections played against each other. In 1931 a rival event was formed with the Campeonato de la República .
In 1942, a uniform national championship was established with the Campeonato de Liga . Seven teams played against each other twice, in the end CSD Municipal , Tipografía Nacional and FC Guatemala were tied at the top of the table. After playoffs, Municipal prevailed.
In the following years the championship was held irregularly. In addition, the number of participating teams and the mode carried out changed several times. At times there were play-off games for the title, at times only league games.
Since 1987 there has been a decision-making round of the teams that are best placed in the regular season. Initially the best four clubs took part, since 1989 it has been the best six teams.
In 1999, as in most South and Central American countries , the season was divided into a spring (“Apertura”) and an autumn (“Clausura”) championship. Since then there has not been a decision-making round in league form, the champions are played in a cup mode with a return leg.
The record champions are CSD Comunicaciones and CSD Municipal with 30 titles each.
mode
Twelve teams are represented in the Liga Nacional de Guatemala. These play against each other in a first round in a home and away game. After each team has played 22 games, the top six teams will qualify for the finals. The first two clubs are automatically seeded for the semifinals, third to sixth places play out their opponents. The winners of the respective championships qualify for the Copa Interclubes UNCAF .
After the regular rounds for Apertura and Clausura have been played, the tables are added up. The bottom of the table in the accumulated table is directly relegated, while the second and third from bottom play against the runner-up or the third of the second division championship, which is played in analog mode to the first division, in relegation games.
