The BVIFA National Football League is the top division of the British Virgin Islands Football Association , the national football association of the British Virgin Islands .

history

The league was founded in 2009, before the islands of Tortola and Virgin Gorda had their own football leagues that played a master. The Tortola League has been played since 1968, initially organized by the Royal Engineers stationed on the island . The Virgin Gorda League was played from 1996. In 1999 a club from Virgin Gorda took part in the Tortola League for the first time. After the termination of the 2005 season, the Tortola League was no longer played, the Virgin Gorda League was continued until the leagues were merged.

The premier season was called Digicel and Speedy's BVIFA Men's Football League and was played with eight teams (3 from Tortola, 5 from Virgin Gorda). The four best-placed clubs played the British Virgin Islands football champions in play-offs . As of the coming season, there will be no additional play-off round. For the 2012/13 season, the league was split into two groups based on the final table for the 2011/12 season. The two best-placed clubs in both groups then met in a knockout round . No official championship was held in 2014/15 and 2015/16, instead a tournament was held in 9-a-side mode. From 2016/17, the official league will be held again, which will now be played again on a single track. For the 2018 season, the staging period was changed from year-round to calendar year. Most of the games will be played at the AO Shirley Recreation Ground .
