The Premier Division is the top division of the Bermuda Football Association , the national football association of Bermuda .

history

In Bermuda , then an independent colony of the United Kingdom , the sport of football was developed by British military personnel from the Royal Air Force , Royal Navy , Royal Engineers and Royal Artillery, among others . The first recorded football game in Bermuda won, according to The Royal Gazette on November 11, 1902, the 36th Company of the Royal Engineers against the 2nd Company of the Royal Worcestershire Regiment 5-0. With the Bermuda Football Combination , the first football league was founded in 1928, in which only the white population was allowed to participate. As a result, the black population's associations founded the in 1941Bermuda Football League . In 1954, black clubs were allowed to take part in the BFA Cup for the first time . In November 1963, both leagues merged to form the Bermuda Football Union .

The first season started with twelve teams, the Young Men's Social Club became the first soccer champion . The number of participants was later reduced to ten clubs. Since the 1999/00 season, the top division has been called the Premier Division . After the top league was played with eight teams from the 2000/01 season, the number of participants rose again to ten from 2009/10. The league is played in a round-robin tournament with a round trip, the season begins in September and ends in April of the following year. The Bermuda soccer champions qualified for the CONCACAF Champions' Cup until 1992 . Since 2010, championship winners have had the opportunity to take part in the CFU Club Championship . This opportunity was taken in 2010–12 and 2016.

The last two clubs at the end of the season are relegated to the second-class First Division .
