Primera División de Fútbol Profesional
The Primera División de Fútbol Profesional is the top division of the Federación Salvadoreña de Fútbol , the national football association of El Salvador, founded in 1969 .
mode
The league currently consists of ten teams. Since the 1998/99 season, a season has been divided into two half-series, called Apertura and Clausura , as is customary in numerous other football associations in Central and South America . Both the winner of the Apertura and the winner of the Clausura can then call themselves football champions of El Salvador. Two soccer champions are determined per calendar year. In each half-series, the ten teams determine the four participants in the final tournament in a return match against every other participant, a total of 18 game days. The final tournament will then be played in the KO system.
Ascent and descent
To determine the relegated team from the Primera División, after the completion of the Apertura and the Clausura of a season, the total points scored by the teams in both half-series are added up. The team with the lowest number of points will be relegated directly. The next team will play in a relegation round against one of the representatives of the second division for another free place in the Primera División for the following season.
Determination of the participants in the CONCACAF Champions League
Both the Apertura winner and the Clausura winner will take part in the CONCACAF Champions League for the following season. The team with the highest total number of points from Apertura and Clausura is directly qualified for the group phase, the other team takes part in the qualifying round. In the event that Apertura and Clausura were won by the same team in one season, the team with the second-best total score moves up.
