history
The Estadio Cuscatlán in San Salvador was built between 1971 and 1976. The opening of the new stadium followed on July 24, 1976 with a friendly match between the national soccer team of El Salvador and the reigning German soccer champions Borussia Mönchengladbach . The game ended with a 2-0 for the guest from Germany . Since that day, the Estadio Cuscatlán has served both the Alianza FC and the El Salvador national football team as a venue for home games.
Alianza has been champion in El Salvador nine times to date and is one of the top clubs in the country. The second user, the national soccer team of the small country in Central America, celebrated its greatest successes with two World Cup participations in 1970 in Mexico and 1982 in Spain as well as twice advancing into the quarter-finals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup . It uses this stadium as a national stadium, which means that almost all international matches take place here.
The Estadio Cuscatlán currently offers space for 45,370 spectators, whereby the capacity of the stadium has often been a cause for discussion. According to FIFA , the stadium has a capacity of 45,370 spectators. The EDESSA put the capacity at 53,700 places. However, this information only applies to the Estadio Cuscatlán as a pure seating stadium. It is not known how large the capacity would be if standing room were used. The Estadio Cuscatlán is one of the most modern stadiums in Central America. It is equipped with high-quality lawn, an irrigation system, floodlights with LED lights , comfortable changing rooms and modern technology.
