The El Salvador Colón (plural Colones ) was the currency of El Salvador from 1919 to 2001 . He replaced the peso . The Colón was named after Cristóbal Colón , the Spanish name of the explorer Christopher Columbus . Colloquially, however, the term peso has been retained.

The currency symbol is ₡ ( Unicode : U + 20A1 colon sign ).

Since 2001, the Colón has been replaced by the US dollar at a fixed ratio of 8.75: 1 . Although there is no time limit, the currency exchange has already been de facto completed, as the central bank has not issued any new colones since 2001 and retains all the colones that it receives. The last Salvadoran banknote series included the denominations of 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 and 200 colones.
