Currency symbol

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A currency symbol (or currency sign ) is a special character that is used as an abbreviation for a currency . It is written either after (€ 12.80) or before the amount ($ 12.80). One or no space is placed between the symbol and the amount (language-dependent). In some countries, most famous Portugal and France , the currency symbols were also used as decimal separators in the amount before the introduction of the euro (123 $ 45 or 12F80).

To avoid confusion, currency symbols that apply to several currencies are also used together with letter abbreviations (for example US- $, US $).

In international payment transactions, abbreviations according to ISO 4217 are preferred because of their clarity; They are also interchangeable with information technology and symbols from foreign cultures are often not understood.
