The Colón or Costa Rican Colón (formerly Kostarika Colón ; plural: Colones ) is the currency of Costa Rica .

The colón was introduced in 1897 and replaced the peso . It was first divided into 100 céntimos , from 1917 to 1919 into 100 centavos , and then again into céntimos.

The currency symbol is ₡ ( Unicode : U + 20A1 colon sign ).

It was named after Christopher Columbus , whose name is Cristóbal Colón in Spanish.

The Colón is in circulation in the following denominations (as of 2007):

  • Banknotes of 50,000, 20,000, 10,000, 5,000, 2,000 and 1,000 Colones,
  • Coins of 500, 100, 50, 25, 10 and 5 colones.
