The Córdoba (NIC) was introduced on March 20, 1912 and replaced the peso that had been valid until then. When it was first introduced, one cordoba was equivalent to one US dollar . The Córdoba is named after Francisco Hernández de Córdoba , the founder of Nicaragua.

Due to high inflation under the Sandinista government , the new Córdoba (nuevo córdoba) was introduced in 1987 , which corresponded to 1000 old Córdobas. On October 13, 1990, the currency was changed again. A new Córdoba Oro was again equivalent to one US dollar when it was introduced and has since been devalued by the Nicaraguan central bank by around 1% a month.
