history

The Gourde was introduced in 1803 when the Haitian Revolution expected the expulsion of the last whites in the French colony of Saint-Domingue . The gourde replaced the livre that was still circulating in Saint-Domingue at that time at the rate of 1 gourde for 8 livres and 5 sous .

Today, the US dollar is also used as a second currency in Haiti because the gourde suffers from high inflation . A special feature is the fictitious "Haitian dollar", which does not exist as a currency unit, but is only used colloquially in price information. One Haitian dollar is equal to 5 gourde, which is e.g. At the time of the Bretton Woods system corresponded to the actual exchange rate. In the meantime, almost 100 gourde have to be paid for one US dollar.
