The (Dutch) Antilles guilder ( Dutch Antilliaanse gulden ) is the currency of the independent Dutch countries Curaçao and Sint Maarten . The guilder was introduced as the currency of the former Netherlands Antilles and was the currency in Aruba until 1986, when Aruba separated from the Netherlands Antilles.

history

The guilder was pegged to the Dutch currency until 1940, and since then it has been valued at a fixed exchange rate against the US dollar . This rate has been 1 USD = 1.79 ANG since 1979 (as with the Aruba Florin ).

At a conference in Willemstad at the end of August 2009, dollarization was also discussed for Curaçao and Sint Maarten . As an alternative, the conversion of the Antilles guilder to the Caribbean guilder was planned for 2012 .

With the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles in 2010 , the end of the currency was decided. In the special municipalities of Bonaire , Saba and Sint Eustatius , the national currency was replaced by the US dollar on January 1, 2011 .

The new currency, the Caribbean guilder , has not yet been introduced. Curaçao and Sint Maarten still use the Antilles guilder, new coins with current dates, the unchanged country name De Nederlandse Antillen and, since 2014, with the portrait of the new King Willem-Alexander are still being minted.

Cash

Banknotes are issued at 10, 25, 50 and 100 guilders. In addition, there are still a few banknotes of 5 and 250 guilders from the 1986–1994 issue in circulation.

In place of the 25 and 250 guilders banknotes, the Caribbean guilders are said to have 20 and 200 guilders banknotes.
