The Belize dollar is the currency of Belize .
The dollar was introduced back in 1864 when the country was still a British colony under the name British Honduras . In 1973, when the country changed its name to Belize, the currency was also renamed the Belize dollar.
The value of the Belize dollar has been linked directly to the US dollar since its inception. 1 USD equals 1.97 BZD. In fact, a rate of 1 to 2 is always used for conversion in the country.
Belize banknotes circulate in denominations of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollars.
