The Bahamian dollar is the currency of the Bahamas .

It is pegged to the US dollar at a 1: 1 ratio . It was introduced in 1966, before the British pound was the currency in the Bahamas. When it was first introduced, one dollar replaced seven shillings , making the Bahamian dollar equivalent to the US dollar (£ 1 = $ 2.80). To facilitate the changeover to the decimal system, the three dollar bill and the 15 cents coin were introduced - $ 3 was roughly equivalent to a British pound and 15 cents to the value of a shilling. The Bahamian dollar is divided into 100 cents ( c ).

Banknotes

All banknotes are the same size (156 × 67 mm) and are issued by the Central Bank of the Bahamas . All but the half- and three-dollar notes that are not currently being reprinted have the new CRISP (Counterfeit Resistant Integrated Security Product) security features .

Queen Elizabeth II is the only woman ever to be present on four banknotes. It adorns the front of the half-dollar bill, the 3-dollar bill, the 10-dollar bill and the largest bill, the 100-dollar bill. The other people on the Bahamian banknotes are four former Bahamian politicians, all of whom were ennobled by the Queen. The back of the banknotes is decorated with motifs and institutions typical of the country. Sister Sarah on the Nassau straw market (half-dollar bill) represents the common people.

CRISP Evolution series

The CRISP Evolution series represents the 7th banknote series of the Bahamian dollar. The series is special in several ways: For the first time, two mixed substrates are used as printing material in addition to paper, namely Hybrid ™ from Louisenthal for the 1- and 5-dollar notes and Durasafe® from Landqart for the 50 and 100 dollar bills . For the first time since the 1984 series, all face values, including the ½ and 3 dollar notes, will be renewed as part of the 7th series. It is the first innovation for the ½ dollar note since 2001, and for the 3 dollar note since 1984. For the first time, the banknotes and their backs have been given a vertical design, whereby the basic motifs of the individual nominal values are not changed .

The CRISP Evolution series begins on September 28, 2016 with the $ 10 note, followed by the $ 1 note on September 27, 2017 and the $ 20 note on September 27, 2018. January 24 On March 28th and 28th, 2019, the ½ dollar and 3 dollar notes will be issued. The new $ 50 note is also expected to be issued in the course of 2019.
