The Uruguayan peso ( ISO-4217 code: UYU ) is the currency of Uruguay . One Uruguayan peso is divided into 100 centésimos . There are coins in circulation of 1, 2, 5, 10 and 50 pesos as well as banknotes with a value of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 2000 pesos.

The current peso replaced 1000 new Uruguayan pesos on March 1, 1993 (ISO 4217 UYN; abbreviation urugN $ ). The new Uruguayan peso had in turn replaced the old peso in November 1973 in an exchange ratio of 1000 to 1.
