The kip ( Lao : ກີບ ) is the currency of Laos . Its currency symbol is a K with a slash . The kip was divided into 100 Att (also At ).

There are banknotes in the denominations 100,000, 50,000, 20,000, 10,000, 5000, 2000, 1000, 500, 100, 50, 20, 10, 5 and 1 kip. The coins that were used in the past are no longer used today; The banknotes of 100 and smaller are also practically no longer in circulation. On November 5, 2010, 100,000 kip banknotes were issued for the first time on the 450th anniversary of the capital, Vientiane . In 1979 a currency reform was carried out, with 100 old kip being replaced by a new kip.

In addition to the kip, the Thai baht and the US dollar serve as almost equal means of payment in the country, partly because the largest banknote, 100,000 kip, is only worth around 10 euros. The euro is also accepted in some places. The currency is highly dependent on the value of the Thai baht as most of Lao's foreign trade takes place with Thailand . Outside of Laos, kip are not changed.
