Maldivian banknotes and coins

The Rufiyaa (German also Maldivian rupee ) is the currency of the Maldives . It is divided into 100 laari . It is usually abbreviated with Rf, MRf or the Thaana letterރfor R. The ISO 4217 code is MVR. It is directly pegged to the US dollar , since 2011 with an exchange rate framework of 1  USD = 12.85 MVR ± 20%, i.e. H. at least 10.28 MVR to a maximum of 15.42 MVR. From 2011 to 2015, the price was always close to the specified maximum limit, roughly between 14.9 and 15.4.

There are banknotes to the denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 rufiyaa in circulation. Coins come in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 25 and 50 Laari, 1 and 2 Rufiyaa.

The currency is used almost exclusively by the Maldivian population, it is common for tourists to pay in US dollars . Tourists are not allowed to import or export the currency.

New series of banknotes

On November 1, 2015, the Maldives Monetary Authority announced the launch of a new series of banknotes produced by DeLaRue . This is the first time that a polymer substrate is used as the basis for Maldivian banknotes. In addition to the existing denominations, a 1000 rufiyaa banknote will be put into circulation. Each note has the dimensions 150 × 70 mm and is labeled in both English and Dhivehi , the official language of the Maldives.
