The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) is the monetary authority of the Maldives , based in the state capital Malé . It also functions as the central bank of the island state.
tasks
The range of tasks of MMA includes
- the issuance of banknotes and coins of the national currency Rufiyaa
- licensing, oversight and regulation of the country's financial sector
- the monitoring of price level stability
- advising the government on monetary and financial issues
management
From its founding in 1981 to mid-2007, the state's finance minister was also ex officio head of the MMA. At that time, a change in the law came into force that separated the two offices in order to strengthen the agency's independence from the government. To this day, the post of deputy is held by the top official of the Ministry of Finance.
