The currency was introduced on July 1, 1994, replacing the Russian ruble .

Currency trading is nationalized. The export of cash is restricted by customs.

Word meaning

Сўм ( Sum , Soʻm ) was a name for the ruble in the Tajik- and Uzbek-speaking population of the Soviet Union ; in Kazakh and Kyrgyz Сом ( Som ). These designations were also found on the back of banknotes. The word Som means “pure” in many Turkic languages and implies “pure gold”.

history

Like other republics of the former Soviet Union, Uzbekistan initially continued to use the ruble after independence. On July 26, 1993, the old Soviet ruble was replaced by the new Russian ruble in Russia . Until the introduction of the So'm on November 15, 1993, both ruble currencies were used side by side in Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan replaced the (new) ruble with the Soʻm at face value (1: 1). The So'm was not further subdivided, only banknotes in the denominations of 1, 3, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 5000 and 10000 So'm were issued. The design of the banknotes was very simple, as this currency was only intended as a transitional currency from the start. All notes showed the coat of arms of Uzbekistan on the obverse and the Sher-Dor-Madrasa in Samarkand on the reverse . They only differed in color and face value.

On July 1st 1994 the new So'm was released. The exchange ratio was 1 new Soʻm = 1000 old Soʻm. The new So'm is divided into 100 Tiyin. When it was introduced, the exchange rate to the US dollar was 1 dollar = 25 Soʻm. Banknotes in denominations of 1, 3, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 have existed since 1994. New notes have been arriving since then due to inflation. In 1997 the 200-So'm-note came, followed in 1999 by the 500-, in 2001 the 1000-, in 2013 the 5000- and in 2017 the 10,000- and 50,000-So'm-note.

A 100,000 So'm note was issued on February 25, 2019. This was redesigned from the design.

Coins

Three coin series have been issued for the new Soʻm. The first series was still embossed with Cyrillic script, the other two with Latin.
