The Yemen rial ( Arabic ريال يمني, DMG Riyāl Yamanī ) is the currency of the Republic of Yemen . It is divided into 100 fils . The name Rial is derived from the Spanish real (derived from Spanish rey = king), which was the currency in Spain for several centuries.

The ISO code is YER.

history

Even before the unification of the two Yemen, the (North Yemeni) rial (YER) was the currency in North Yemen (in the Kingdom of Yemen and from 1962 in the Yemeni Arab Republic ) . In South Yemen ( Protectorate of South Arabia , South Arab Federation , then Democratic People's Republic of Yemen ) the currency was the South Yemeni Dinar (YDD).

The North Yemen rial was initially divided into 40 buqsha , 80 halala or 160 zalat . As of April 1, 1975, 1 rial was divided into 100 fils.

After the unification of Yemen in 1990, the rial was adopted as the common currency, the ISO currency code YER remained. Along with the rial, the dinar remained the official currency in the south of the country until 1996.

In March 1990 a rial was worth 0.174 DM ; a year earlier, a South Yemeni dinar was equivalent to DM 5.19. From 1990 to 1996 the exchange rate between the two currencies was 1 dinar = 26 rials.
