history

In the economic life of the Portuguese colony Macau, in addition to the British and Chinese currency, the Mexican silver peso (known as pataca in Portugal), which was widespread in China, was introduced in 1894. One peso (pataca) was initially equivalent to 450 Portuguese reís . Initially only as a unit of account for trade and money transactions, the pataca became the official currency of Macau in 1901. The Portuguese Banco Nacional Ultramarino ("National Overseas Bank") in Lisbon has been issuing Pataca notes since 1905 . Since 1995 the Banco da China (also Bank of China ) has been allowed to issue patacas.
